APAC Emerges as a Fertile Market for Green

With various governments implementing national or regional initiatives and programs to encourage energy conservation activities, the 'green' trend is taking off in a big way in the Asia Pacific. The governments' endeavors offer tremendous opportunities to technologists in the green and energy efficiency space in the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC), building automation systems (BAS), and lighting systems markets.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Strategic Analysis of Green Technologies Market - Energy Efficiency (HVAC, BAS, and Lighting), finds that market is likely to register more than 10 percent growth annually until 2015 due to the increasing price of conventional energy.

The Green Building trend is breaking out of the confines of the Japanese market and is gaining currency in many other countries in the Asia Pacific. Despite green technologies' high costs, consumers are increasingly basing their purchase decisions on the product's environment friendliness and their ability to reduce energy costs and carbon footprints.

Greening our Buildings – a Key Growth Area

To sustain and grow the industry in the medium term, the industry should go beyond traditional construction. It must move into the cutting edge of technology and build capabilities in the key growth area of Green Buildings. In this regard, we have introduced incentives schemes and training programmes to build capability and grow the pool of professionals needed. Let me elaborate.

Green Incentives

As part of the 2nd Green Building Masterplan, we launched two new incentive schemes in April 2009, namely, the Green Mark GFA Incentive Scheme and the Green Mark Incentive Scheme (GMIS) for Existing Buildings. The response to date has been encouraging. A total of 19 applications for these two schemes have been received and they are being evaluated. I encourage the industry to actively tap on these schemes to pave the way for the greening of our built environment.

Jakarta a Step Closer to Getting Green Buildings

The Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI) will launch a framework for a rating system, in a step toward a standard for newly constructed buildings to be certified environmentally friendly, an official said.

Rana Yusuf Nasir, GBCI director of ratings and technology, said Wednesday the framework that will be launched Friday could serve as a test for property developers planning green buildings before the council launches its official rating system in March or early April.

“By May, certification for green buildings can begin,” Rana said at the sidelines of a discussion on rating systems for green buildings. He noted, however, that the framework was for newly constructed buildings. The council will start preparing a rating system for existing buildings next week.
