China Green Building Events Run With Success

Running from December 10-11 Noppen's China Advanced Green Building Summit 2009, organized in conjunction with Shanghai Green Ecosystem Building & Living Environment, Science-Technology Expansion Centre in Shanghai, focused on cost, energy and environmental solutions in buildings in an attempt to increase the country's uptake of green building solutions.
Currently, developers in China are hesitant to pursue green building due to common misconceptions that the market is not mature enough and that the cost of green building is higher and green building initiatives lack government support. These false impressions are a result of a lack of awareness in the country, which is a problem the two day event was aimed at solving.

The summit brought together green building project developers, investors, bankers, customers, and technology solution providers to share best practice methods for green building construction. Low cost and financial benefits were demonstrated through case studies on a global scale, including some examples from China itself.

Singapore to Train Up Green Building Professionals

Singapore must train up to 20,000 more green building professionals by 2030.

They will be needed to help introduce innovations for carbon emission reduction in buildings - one of the biggest carbon culprits in Singapore.

Buildings produce six million tons or 16 per cent of Singapore's carbon emissions - mainly from using electricity to power lighting and air-conditioning.

To reduce electricity use in buildings, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) is targeting to green 80 per cent of Singapore's buildings by 2030. Currently, only five per cent of buildings in Singapore are green.

The City Square Mall is Singapore's first eco-friendly mall, receiving the BCA's Green Mark Platinum rating - the highest achievement in green buildings.

Its building cost of S$188 million is five per cent more than conventional ones. But its energy consumption is 39 per cent less, thanks to its green features, inspired mainly by buildings in Japan.

"It is through these visits that we learn about foreign best practices. We learn about what unique features they have... we implement it and make it even better," said Allen Ang, assistant GM of Projects Division, City Developments.

Going Green, Brick by Brick

India is witnessing tremendous growth in infrastructure development. Hence, the need to minimise use of natural resources for the buildings construction and their associated impact on environment. A green building is one “which uses less water, optimises energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building.”

The green measures adopted by the recently constructed green buildings include preservation and reuse of fertile top soil, reduced building footprints, central courtyards, day lighting, ventilation, roof gardens to reduce heat-island impact, use of treated grey water for irrigation and air conditioning cooling water makeup, root-zone treatment for wastewater, efficient envelope, use of energy efficient air-conditioning systems, on-site renewable energy, wind towers, monitoring procedures, post-occupancy, careful handling of construction waste, use of materials with recycled content, resource reuse, use of paints, sealants and adhesives with low VOC and resource reuse.

The Green Building movement in India is pioneered by the CII- Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). The vision of the council is to usher in a green building movement in India and to become one of the global leaders in green buildings by 2012. With a modest beginning of 20,000 ft2 green built-up area in the country in 2003, today 436 green buildings with a built-up area 312 mn ft2 are being constructed all over India, of which 54 are certified green buildings. Prominent ones include the CII-GBC, Hyderabad, ITC Green Centre, Gurgaon, Grundfos Building in Chennai and Wipro in Gurgaon among others.

Businesses Urged to Go Green

Jakarta can save hundreds of millions of kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per year by reducing energy use in the capital's commercial building sector, says a member of Indonesia's Green Building Council (GBCI).

The deputy chair of the council, Rana Yusuf Nasir, said recently that businesses could reduce 7 to 11 percent of their energy use by tuning up appliances, downsizing and upgrading performances with no extra cost. He also added that energy use could be reduced by 17 to 30 percent at a medium cost.

In an analysis carried out in 2004, Rana said that Jakarta had around 10 million square meters of commercial building that consumed around 2,500 million kWh per year. By saving 15 percent in energy use, 375 million kWh per year can be saved.

He added that it would also reduce CO2 emissions by 303,720 tons per year or an equivalent of having 475,000 trees.

Naning S. Adiningsih Adiwoso, chairwoman of the council said the essence of green buildings was efficiency.

"Green buildings have to use water and air conditioning efficiently. Such buildings should use environmentally friendly materials. It would be better if they created zero carbon by using biodegradable, recyclable, and reusable materials," she said.
